LOMBARDY
Those who "know" about ceramics immediately associate the words "Old Lodi" with the style characterized by lively polychrome flower decorations, created during the eighteenth century by Lodi potters, already appreciated and disputed throughout Lombardy since the fifteenth century.
The craftsmanship of ceramics, therefore, boasts ancient and glorious traditions and is still vital, even if, contrary to what usually happens, a geographical aggregation pole has not developed for this sector, with the exception of the city of Laveno, in the province of Varese, which has now become an important center for the production of table ceramics, many of which still retain particular forms of a traditional character.
The current laboratories are scattered throughout the region, although the highest concentration is found in Milan, where the inspiration of individual operators has taken over traditional aesthetic strands, with the exception of the large dark green enameled vases, once used mainly for the preservation of food, which continue to find loyal buyers.
MARCHES
The
people of the Marches have always been industrious people, attracted by beauty but also
extremely practical, capable of transforming aesthetic refinement into a model to be multiplied and traded.
It is no coincidence, therefore, that a centuries-old familiarity with contaminations between culture and the market was transformed into forms of industry such as furniture, paper and fashion
(in particular, footwear), up to that of musical instruments.
Going back in time, the same dynamics can be found in Tolentino, in the province of Macerata, where since the 1500s a school of majolica masters has developed who have given life to a flourishing ceramic craftsmanship that then spread above all in Ascoli Piceno and in the Pesaro area, from Urbania to Castel Durante and Sant'Angelo in Vado, still active in the production of tableware, ornamental vases, plates, tiles, pharmacy containers and fruit bowls.
