The only liqueur wine made in the region of Latium, Aleatico di Gradoli is produced in a limited area that includes the communes of Gradoli, Grotte di Castro, San Lorenzo Nuovo and Latera, situated along the northeastern shore of Lake Bolsena in the province of Viterbo. 
       The Aleatico variety was introduced into Italy from Greece in remote times and it found a highly favorable habitat first in Apulia, where it still makes an important contribution to the region’s output of wines, and later in various restricted districts throughout the Italian peninsula. The vine yields small clusters with grapes of a vermilion color. Their skins are transparent but heavily covered with bloom, which gives the entire cluster an opaque black appearance. 
       The production area is enchanting from the standpoint of landscape but it is all too limited from the aspect of wine production. The Aleatico variety thrives within that zone, with its particular soil and microclimate, but it does not do well in surrounding districts. That factor has limited output to such an extent that it is extremely difficult to expand sales on many markets. And only knowledgeable connoisseurs are aware of the wine and its qualities.
