The territory of the DOC wines of the Piave is situated in a vast plain that is bounded by the sea to the south and by the Conegliano and Montello hills to the northwest. The river Piave flows through the plain, which, around the river, is shared by the provinces of Treviso and Venice. These flatlands consist principally of sediment. Vines flourish in such soils, guaranteeing growers constant and abundant production.
In this area, as in other parts of the Veneto, it was once the custom to plant several varieties in alternating rows in the same vineyard. More recently, the need for more rational cultivation has led the growers to renew their vineyards, which has profoundly changed the production profile of the wines of the Piave.

The new vitivinicultural approach was initiated about 25 years ago with the conversion of the vineyards to specialized culture. In the replanting, considerable space was dedicated to Merlot, which now accounts for the major part of the DOC output of the area. It is followed at some distance by Cabernet and Verduzzo. Although they are not as significant in quantitative terms, Tocai Italico, Raboso, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Nero represent a new frontier where much innovation and experimentation are going on.
