Barbera, Marzemino, Schiava and a modern variety known as Incrocio (Hybrid) Terzi, created through the fertilization of Cabernet
Franc with Barbera pollen, have found a highly favorable habitat on the marly clay of the Campiani, Stella and Gussago hills in the province of Brescia. And in that area, the grapes
of those varieties are combined to make Cellatica.
Vines have been cultivated in this pleasant hilly district since the time of the Romans or perhaps even earlier in association with two other characteristic crops,
summer-harvested peaches and winter-harvested chestnuts.
The community of Cellatica is situated at the center of the production area and it has long served as a leading example of how cooperative efforts can safeguard and
promote a local heritage. It was the spirit of teamwork that led the area’s growers to form, as far back as 1934, a Consortium of Producers of the Wines of Cellatica. That was the first
step in a concerted effort aimed at promoting the zone’s wines that culiminated in 1968 with the granting of their Denominazione di Origine Controllata.
