Contrary to standard geographical usage of the terms upper and lower, Alto Monferrato is situated to the south of Basso Monferrato. The two districts are divided by the Villafranca d’Asti depression and, thus, by the lower course of the stream Borbore and the lower part of the valley of the Tanaro river.

       A singular aspect of this game of words and meanings is that uplands in the Lower Monferrato rise to higher altitudes--as much as 700 meters--than in Upper Monferrato. However, the average altitude in the southern zone is about 350 meters, which is highly conducive to the cultivation of vines. And it is without dispute the Piedmontese area where viticultural is most intensely practiced. 
       It is almost impossible to indicate a single winemaking center in the Basso Monferrato, since wine is produced everywhere. It can be asserted with full confidence that the sole problem is one of choice. And among the numerous types is Gabiano.

        The wine is made from Barbera grapes to which a small percentage (5 to 10%) of Freisa and/or Grignolino is added. As in the case of all wines obtained from Barbera, Gabiano has a strong personality. In color, it is an intense ruby red that tends toward garnet red with aging. The wine can be consumed throughout a meal.
