Sizzano was highly regarded by Camillo Benso Count of Cavour, as a letter he wrote to Senator Giacomo Giovanetti indicates. The letter, dated 1845, contains a warm endorsement of the wine by Italy’s first premier. He compared Sizzano with the most highly appreciated of French products because of the finesse and fine quality of its bouquet. 
       The Sizzano winemaking tradition is quite ancient. The Benedictines of the Abbey of San Nazario, which still stands to the south of Sesia, contributed to the spread of the best methods of cultivating vines and vinifying wines throughout the entire area in which Sizzano is situated.

       Ownership of the vineyards at Sizzano then passed from the Benedictines to the friars and monks of the Ordine degli Umiliati, who, in the 14th century, founded the Monastery of San Clemente on the hill of Sizzano. 
Afterward, the lands of Sizzano were acquired by wealthy noble families.
